PE

"Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect."

 The Primary National Curriculum 2014

Intent

At Windermere, pupils experience a broad range of physical activities from the earliest opportunities to support their development. We aim to introduce pupils to games and sports beyond the traditional primary games, so that every child has the opportunity to discover sports and activities which they enjoy, at which they might excel and continue beyond their time in school. We foster a lifelong love and priority of one’s own physical well-being. Pupils are taught to respect their peers, in the context of them being teammates and opponents, and will learn to ‘win’ with pride and ‘lose’ with dignity. Pupils are encouraged to work collaboratively to achieve personal and team goals by supporting, encouraging and leading one another in an inclusive way.

Implementation

PE includes games, adventurous activities, gymnastics, dance and swimming. The PE curriculum includes a broad range of activities, teaching core skills that build and develop over time, supporting children to enjoy physical activity in school. Some teaching is carried out by specialist PE coaches, some by our own teachers, using a clear sequenced and progressive PE curriculum (Get Set for PE). Our free after-school clubs extend the opportunities we offer pupils to develop in competitive games and fun skill-building activities. Pupils are encouraged to participate in events in many different sports at an 'Aspire and Develop' or 'Compete' level. Pupils in KS2 learn to swim at a local swimming pool (Westminster Lodge).
