Geography
“A high-quality geography education should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.”
The Primary National Curriculum 2014
Intent
At Windermere Primary, the geography curriculum is designed to promote pupils' greater appreciation of the world, its people and their place in it and a real sense of identity and belonging. We believe that through our teaching, our pupils will be equipped with key geographical skills to help them understand the Earth’s key physical and human processes, and develop knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. Our classroom learning, fieldwork and educational visits will stimulate and answer questions which will inspire a natural curiosity and foster lifelong learning and care for their environment, the Earth and its peoples.
Implementation
The curriculum is designed to develop children’s understanding of the world in which we live in a progressive way, exploring our local area and expanding to the UK, Europe and other parts of the world to develop their understanding and draw on the range of experiences of the world they bring to learning. Fieldwork and mapping skills are integral to our teaching and we include as many opportunities as we can to involve children in practical geographical research and enquiry.
