Year 1

Year 1 & 2 Homework Grid – Summer 2023

Year 1 Annual Curriculum

Welcome to Year One

In Year 1 we build on the solid foundations established in the Reception year. The children enjoy a wide range of learning opportunities to encourage and develop their curiosity in the world around them. We follow a creative curriculum in KS1 using multi-sensory learning to ensure access for all the children. Each term a topic is chosen to stimulate independent learning across the curriculum and to deepen their understanding.

Children are taught reading skills through our daily phonics sessions, these skills are further developed through Guided Reading. The children are given opportunities throughout every lesson to practise their reading skills further. Your support at home with reading is invaluable and we would encourage you to read with your child and make comments in their planners. Children can change their book once it has been read three times; this helps to develop fluency and allows your child to see themselves as a reader. Once a child has read 20 times they are entitled to choose a Reading Reward book of their very own, in order to start building their own personal collection of special books.

We would encourage parents to support children with their homework and practise their spellings daily. Homework is given out at the beginning of term. Children are required to complete nine homework tasks (one from each area) before the end of each term. Spellings are given out on Monday and books are needed back in on Friday when children are tested.

P.E. lessons take place on Wednesday and Thursday, both indoors and outdoors (weather permitting) covering games, gym and dance, although they should keep their PE kit in school at all times.

On a Friday afternoon we have a show and tell session when children can share any of their achievements or bring in anything interesting and educational. We would also welcome visits from friends and family with particular skills or experiences to share with the class.

If you have any questions or concerns, please speak to me at the end of the day or make an appointment at the office.
